What does a deacon wear at Holy Mass?

  • The Amice It consists of a white rectangular cloth connected to two long ribbons, by which it is fastened around the shoulders of the deacon. Its purpose is to cover the deacon’s ordinary clothing and prevent damage to their other vestments due to perspiration. The Alb A long white garment which can be used by all liturgical ministers. It is a reminder of the baptismal garment worn when the new Christian "Put on Christ." The heavenly liturgy is our participation in heavenly worship- in heaven everyone wears white! The Cincture A long cord used for fastening albs at the waist. It holds the loose-fitting type of alb in place and is used to adjust it to proper length. It is usually white. The Deacon Stole A long cloth-like "scarf." According to the manner in which it worn it is the mark of the office of the priest or deacon. A deacon wears it over his left shoulder, fastening it at his right side. The Dalmatic A loose-fitting robe with open sides and wide sleeves worn by a deacon at Holy Mass. It takes its color from the liturgical feast: WHITE- Christmas, Easter, Feasts of the Lord, Feasts of Mary, the angels and any saints who were not martyrs RED- Our Lord's passion, Martyrs, Palm Sunday, Pentecost GREEN- Ordinary Time VIOLET- Advent, Lent BLACK- All Souls Day, Funeral Masses
