Beginning this upcoming July there will be a priest helping me with the weekend Mass schedule. His name is Fr. Steve Giannini. As you well know a priest is not supposed to say more than two daily Masses a day and three Sunday Masses a weekend. I say five Sunday Masses. There are five other priests in our archdiocese that are in this same situation. Three of us are in close proximity: Seymour, Madison, and North Vernon. The diocese is trying to be helpful by alleviating this five Mass schedule. So, they are sending assistance! Fr. Steve Giannini will be taking Masses for the priests in these five -weekend Mass situations. So, he will be serving at 7 different parishes: Our Lady of Sorrows in Vevay, Prince of Peace in Madison, St. Ambrose in Seymour, Our Lady of Providence in Brownstown and the three parishes in Jennings County- St. Ann, St. Joseph and St. Mary s. Each weekend he will have a different schedule and will spread this time equally among the different parishes and Mass schedules. Here is a little about Fr. Giannini. He was born in Richmond, Indiana in 1955; that makes him 56 years old. He has assisted at various parishes: Christ the King- Indianapolis, St. Jude- Indianapolis, Sacred Heart/St. Ann- Terre Haute, St. Luke- Indianapolis, St. Barnabas- Indianapolis, and St. John- Indianapolis. He has also served as a High School Chaplin, Dean of the Terre Haute Deanery and Metropolitan Judge. His current assignment is as the Vicar for Clergy. This position in our diocese exists to assist the archbishop with the clergy. The word vicar mean in the place of. Fr. Giannini works in the place of the bishop in regards to issues dealing with clergy: assignments, formation, training, and misconduct. I know Fr. Giannini very well. We served at St Luke in Indianapolis together. I was his associate pastor for two years. He is a great man and a good priest. I look forward to him coming to Jennings County and serving at my three parishes. He is full of joy and loves the sacraments! I think that you will like him. His schedule will be random. Some of you attend Mass at different Mass times, some of you are very regular to one particular Mass time. This will effect how often you see Fr. Giannini. We are scheduling things so that he does not have the same Mass two weeks in a row, so you might see him more or less if you skip around. All in all it will be a great relief to me!!! Please make him feel welcome and share with him the love of Christ! Most importantly PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE continue to pray for an increase in HOLY and ZEALOUS Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. We need good and holy men to accept the call to serve God and His Holy Church. God is calling, but the noise of this world and its distractions are big; pray that their ears and hearts will be open!
