The Epiphany of the Lord –
Jan 8, 2012
Ask Father
Meyer: What do we actually know about the 3 kings?
Not a whole lot!
After Jesus was born, Magi came to look for Him, probably
from an area which is now in either Iraq, Iran, or Saudi Arabia. Although they
are often called the “Three” Kings, the Bible does not say how many there were
(3), or that they were kings. The tradition speaks of three men, due to that
fact that there were three recorded gifts.
But this does not mean that there were only three. It could have been a large caravan; but
tradition speaks of three.
Concerning their title or occupation, one theory is
that they might have been astrologers or at least very learned men, who studied
the pattern of the sky and ancient prophesies.
They were certainly men of great learning. The word Magi comes from the greek word 'magos' (where the english word 'magic' comes from). Magos
itself comes from the old Persian word 'Magupati'.
This was the title given to priests in a sect of the ancient Persian religions
such as Zoroastrianism. Today we'd call them astrologers. The magi would have
followed the patterns of the stars religiously.
They had seen an unusual new star in the sky, and knew that it told of
the birth of a special king. It was prophesized about in the pages of the Old
Testament and even though they were not Jewish, they would have known of the
prophesy from their knowledge of World Religions.
Concerning the star go to http://bethlehemstar.net/ to be blown away by the night sky at the time of
Jesus’ birth!
Legends are told about the magi that give them
names and descriptions:
Gaspar- has brown hair and a brown beard and normally wears
a green cloak and a gold crown with jewels on it. He is the King of Sheba.
Gaspar represents the Frankincense brought to Jesus.
Melchior- has long white hair and a white beard and
wears a gold cloak. He is the King of Arabia. Melchior represents the Gold
brought to Jesus.
Balthazar- has black skin and a black beard and wears
a purple cloak. He is the King of Tarse and Egypt.
Balthazar represents the gift of Myrrh that was brought to Jesus.
There is an actual tomb of these three men in
Cologne Germany. World Youth Day in 2005
was in Cologne and I had the amazing opportunity to go and pray at the
tomb.
Then they gave their gifts to him. The gifts seem
quite strange to give to a baby, but we believe that they were symbolic gifts
that had the following meanings:
Gold: is associated with Kings
and we believe that Jesus is the King of Kings.
Frankincense: is used by all major world
religions, and showed that Jesus is God and we are called to worship him.
Myrrh: is a perfume that is put
on dead bodies to make them smell nice.
It showed that Jesus would suffer and die.
The gifts are also all things that come the east of
Israel in Arabia.
Jesus is visited by foreigners who worship Him,
thus He is born not for a small group of people- the Jews, but for all
people. Who do you know that does not
worship Jesus; that needs to bend the knee- let’s pray for them!

Proclamation of the Date of
Easter
While a day like Christmas is fixed in our minds and on the calendars on
December 25th, many of the important feasts of the Church year move, based upon
the date that Easter is set. Easter changes each year moving to the Sunday
after the "Paschal Full Moon," and can fall between March 22 and
April 25. In ancient times before
calendars were common, most people did not know the dates for the upcoming
Liturgical year. On Epiphany Sunday, the upcoming dates were
"proclaimed" after the gospel in this way:
Dear brothers and
sisters, the glory of the Lord has shone upon us, and shall ever be manifest
among us, until the day of his return. Through
the rhythms of times and seasons let us celebrate the mysteries of salvation.
Let us recall the year's
culmination, the Easter Triduum of the Lord: his last supper, his crucifixion, his burial,
and his rising celebrated between the evening of the Fifth day of April and the
evening of the Seventh day of April, Easter Sunday being on the Eighth day of
April.
Each Easter -as on each
Sunday- the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed by which Christ
has forever conquered sin and death.
From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy.
Ash Wednesday, the
beginning of Lent, will occur on the Twenty-Second day of February.
The Ascension of the
Lord will be commemorated on the Seventeenth day of May.
Pentecost, joyful
conclusion of the season of Easter, will be celebrated on the Twenty-Seventh
day of May.
And, this year the First
Sunday of Advent will be on the Second day of December.
Likewise the pilgrim
Church proclaims the passover of Christ
in the feasts of the holy Mother of God, in the feasts of the Apostles and
Saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed. To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is
to come, Lord of time and history, be endless praise, forever and ever. Amen.
Pray for those who need
healing grace and comfort
A ROSARY will be prayed the First
Wednesday of each month
at St Mary’s ~ 5:15PM. Please join us!
